Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Russell attended Briarwood Christian School and later graduated from Mountain Brook High School. He was recruited to play Division I soccer at The Citadel –The Military College of South Carolina. There, Dr. Russell was awarded scholarships in both academics and athletics. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Premed and Biology. Dr. Russell graduated Cum Laude with his Doctorate of Chiropractic from Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, Missouri.  

Dr. Russell began his career as an independent contractor at Mobile Chiropractic Associates in Mobile, Alabama. In 2003, he acquired Hug Chiropractic Clinic in Vestavia, Alabama. Under Dr. Russell’s management, the clinic has grown to employ six chiropractors in three locations around Birmingham. In 2008, he acquired his long time mentor’s practice in Clay, Alabama, Griffiths Chiropractic Care, and in 2017, he opened Hug Chiropractic’s third location in Gardendale, Alabama. In 2023, Dr. Russell and Dr. Rod Sones began the process of merging to form Pillar Chiropractic and Rehab. 

Dr. Russell’s personal mission is to improve the quality of and the accessibility to chiropractic physicians' services. As an adjunct professor, he regularly educates chiropractic interns in the Vestavia clinic.

Dr. Russell’s clinical focus is the conservative management of musculoskeletal pain syndromes, especially mechanical spine pain, neuritis, radiculopathies, myositis and headaches. Focused on translating research evidence into practice, Dr. Russell’s chiropractic approach includes education, multimodal approaches to pain care and function, behavior modification, and primary, secondary and tertiary prevention strategies and rehabilitation. 

Dr. Russell is married to his high school sweetheart, Anne, and they have three children, Elaine, Emily and Robby. He enjoys spending time catching fish, especially those toothy creatures offshore, and hunting Native American artifacts and fossils. The Russells are members of Briarwood Presbyterian Church.
